Dr. Eliot P. Kaplan holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York State, and is a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS). He is the founder and director of The Paradox Psychology Institute. He has been counseling adults, adolescents, and families since 1983. Most recently he worked as a specialist in treating Problem Sexual Behaviors (PSB) and other anti-social behaviors in a nationally known residential facility for adolescent boys in Westchester, NY. As a result of his success, he authored a chapter in a professional volume series on this topic.
Dr. Kaplan offers a relaxed style that allows clients to feel comfortable as they address their personal issues. He is aware that it is often a ‘guy thing’ for male clients to be cautious when first attending counseling. With such clients, he is able to acknowledge their concerns, while promoting a comfortable atmosphere to address parenting and relationship issues.
Dr. Kaplan’s work focuses on strategic counseling based on paradoxical interventions. These interventions utilize a ‘win-win approach’ that encourages the client’s expression of ‘free will motivation’. The advantage of this method is that is non-confrontational and influences rapid change through awareness and education. By learning to recognize habitual reactions, early warning signs, and trigger situations, clients gain the tools to ‘undo’ troublesome or destructive patterns. This type of change occurs easily and without the struggle most people associate with the counseling process. Dr. Kaplan lectures nationally to healthcare providers regarding the utilization of this method. This method is particularly helpful in allowing clients gain impulse control over anger and other serious volatile behaviors.
